McFarland was traveling in a burgundy 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser with the license tag number TCY-9075. A similar vehicle is shown below.
Family members said he told them he was going to California with his daughter, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff s Office.
The sheriff s office said an off-duty Nashville Metro police officer assisted with finding the suspect vehicle after a citizen called in a tip.
McFarland was taken into custody.

UPDATE: Both missing persons have been safely located in Tennessee, according to the BCSO, thanks to the help of the Nashville Metro PD.
BRUNSWICK COUNTY Authorities are looking for Aubrey McFarland, a four year old girl last seen in the Brunswick County town of Winnabow. An Amber Alert was activated Wednesday afternoon.
According to the abduction broadcast, Elijah McFarland is the abductor. They were last seen heading north on Highway U.S. 17 in a burgundy 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Elijah Muhammad, 37, is described as a Black male with a height of 5 feet 8 inches and weighing approximately 161 pounds. NORTHWEST, N.C. (WECT) - The Northwest Police Department and the Brunswick County Sheriffâs Office continue the search for a 70-year-old man who has been missing since last week and is the subject of a Silver Alert.
According to a Facebook post, Artis Bryant was last seen at a home on Northwest Road around 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25 while wearing a black Kango hat, glasses, a dark jacket, dark pants, and dark shoes.

BELLE MEADE, Tenn. (WECT) - A fateful stop at a Nashville McDonaldâs led to a chain of events that helped Tennessee law enforcement find a missing four-year-old Brunswick County girl at the center of Wednesdayâs nationwide Amber Alert.
Just before 6:30 a.m., the Brunswick County Sheriffâs Office issued a Silver Alert for Elijah Muhammad McFarland, 37, and said he told family members that he was taking his daughter, Aubrey McFarland, to California. An Amber Alert would be issued for Aubrey later that afternoon.
Wilmington is one of the most visited cities in New Hanover County.
It s also ranked as one of the top four most common cities for the occurrence of human trafficking in North Carolina, according to Just Ask Prevention.
First Fruit Ministries in Wilmington started a safe house, called 5.11 House, that provides safe, stable housing and case management, housing navigation, peer support, recovery services, behavioral health services, primary medical care, and financial assistance to victims of sex and labor trafficking.
The house, which is a six-month transitional safe house allowing victims of human trafficking time to get back on their feet, has started accepting referrals for residents.
