Subscriber only A major cash splash on an iconic project is a key outcome of the Federal Government s 2021 Budget for Rockhampton residents. An extra $7.5m has been earmarked for Rookwood Weir as part of a $98m injection over three years under the National Water Grid Fund, formerly known as the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund. This brings total project funding to $183.6m for the Weir. Rockhampton residents will benefit from a pre-Budget announcement of $400m for the Bruce Highway, from Rockhampton to Gladstone and Mackay to Proserpine, covering floodproofing, safety improvements and reducing congestion. The Budget papers did not show any specific allocations for the Peak Downs Highway.

IPSWICH and Gatton missed out on scoring big-ticket items in the Federal Government’s annual Budget today.
Specific funding allocations for projects across regional Queensland were thin on the ground in Treasurer Josh Frydenberg’s billion-dollar spending spree today, with our region one of many to not rate a mention.
There were hopes money would be set aside for the Springfield-Ipswich trainline and public transport corridor, the North Ipswich Reserve upgrade and a new commitment on the much-needed upgrade of the Cunningham Hwy Yamanto-Ebenezer Creek.
None of these projects were flagged by the Treasurer, but our region should benefit from broader funding pledges including:

The Federal Treasurer today committed significant funding to maintain the economic recovery after the COVID-19 pressures. While the budget will be in deficit the projections for recovery are positive and exceed earlier forecasts.
Investment in farm businesses, infrastructure, biosecurity and telecommunications are the standout announcements for regional Australia in the 2021/2022 Federal Budget and will contribute to stronger regions, according to NSW Farmers.
President of NSW Farmers’ James Jackson said a $15 billion infrastructure spend including a significant allocation to the Great Western Highway duplication, over $370 million for biosecurity, and the continuation of instant asset write-offs for small business all indicate regional NSW and agriculture are valued aspects of Australia’s economy.
