The American Muddle: Notes from a Podcast Category: Features from The Berkeley Daily Planet

Sunday January 24, 2021 - 03:05:00 PM Several weeks ago, I was invited to participate in my first podcast an event hosted by World BEYOND War. WBW is a global organization devoted to promoting peaceful alternatives to local and geopolitical conflicts. WBW s concerns have been voiced by none other than Martin Sheen, who appears in a number of WBW videos. Here s one example:  Martin Sheen Talks to World Beyond War    The participants (myself included) were all members of the WBW board. They included: Donnal Walter (Arkansas), Odile Hugonot Haber (Michigan), John Reuwer (Vermont), Alice Slater (New York) and our host, Marc Eliot Stein. We were invited to discourse on matters including Trumpism, cultural divides, the Green New Deal, deeper issues and hopeful solutions. The topic was an assessment of the current and imminent state of the USA. (You can listen to the podcast here.)

How does a nation heal? One conversation at a time

After four years of angry tweets and deepening partisanship, of two presidential impeachments and an election that ignited a siege, it sounds almost too naive to suggest that the road to healing these Divided States of America is as simple and as complicated as this: It begins with one conversation at a time. That is the sentiment voiced by an array of faith leaders, political scientists, community organizers and ethicists, when asked how to resume the pursuit of a more perfect union. “It sounds really silly, but I think we just have to spend more time listening to one another than talking at one another, ” said Marisa Abrajano, a political science professor and provost of the Earl Warren College at UC San Diego.
