UNT staff shift into high gear to keep campus operational while keeping students warm and fed

UNT Facilities team embodied their core values of service, excellence and integrity all week. The Grounds crew handled snow and ice removal from the onset, keeping walkways and streets safe, while helping mitigate further structural damage from the extreme winter conditions. Maintenance teams for campus and auxiliary facilities worked nonstop throughout the crisis. Some facilities team members even camped out in their offices to ensure around-the-clock support, while others braved hazardous roads in the middle of the night to respond to emergencies. Team leaders built and maintained 24/7 shifts while key team members juggled all the data and damage reports in a time when communications capabilities were spotty, at best, with limited to no internet access and inconsistent cellular service throughout the area.

News - Broader access and a better future thanks

News Author: Corporate Communication and Marketing Division / Afdeling Korporatiewe Kommunikasie en Bemarking Published: 10/05/2021 “We are confident that Stellenbosch University students have more choices, broader access and a better future as a result of our approach to language. This is according to Prof Wim de Villiers, SU Rector and Vice-Chancellor in addressing commissioners of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Stellenbosch today (Monday, 10 May 2021). The SAHRC convened an inquiry into allegations of a prohibition on the use of Afrikaans at SU. The hearing was held at STIAS in Stellenbosch. “Let me say straight away that the suggestion that students across campus, as a matter of University policy, have at any time been prohibited from communicating in Afrikaans is false. There is no ban on Afrikaans at Stellenbosch University – not in lecture halls, in residences, or anywhere else on campus. That is not our policy, Prof De Villiers stat

OPINION: Covid-19 vaccine mandates, education will keep DePaul s community safe

DePaul’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate ensures that all students will be safe from infecting themselves and others  from both the virus and new strains. As a freshman student, I would not have considered returning to campus in the fall if DePaul had not mandated the vaccine. There is too much risk of exposure and infection if a majority of the campus is not vaccinated.  The CDC and Illinois Public Health Department have demonstrated that all three vaccines are highly effective in protecting against the virus. Moderna is 94.1 percent effective,Pfzier being 95 percent effective and Johnson & Johnson is 66.3 percent effective, according to the CDC. The vaccine is too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially when everyone over 16 is eligible to receive one in Illinois.

UC Berkeley RAs reflect on working conditions amid COVID-19 pandemic

“Rolling with the punches” has been a common mode of action among UC Berkeley students as many continue to grapple with the evolving policies and procedures induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. For three campus students and resident assistants, or RAs, who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation, this adjustment has been a bit more jarring. Beyond daily academic responsibilities, one of the anonymous RAs a campus junior said they have to carry out the duties outlined in their job description. Among those tasks are performing rounds to check in on residents, retrieving locked-out residents and fostering a sense of community for students amid their transition to a life of newfound freedoms and independence.

Disparities in COVID-19 vaccination rates seen throughout Berkeley

Disparities in COVID-19 vaccination rates seen throughout Berkeley Christina Owen/Staff The city of Berkeley is experiencing wide disparities in COVID-19 vaccination rates, with the discrepancies being seen through comparisons made between ZIP codes. Alameda County opened up vaccination eligibility April 9, allowing all adults ages 16 and older to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a previous article from The Daily Californian. The city has been working with partners and a volunteer outreach team to get residents vaccinated. Despite this, many city residents have not yet received their first shot. More than 99% of residents in the ZIP code 94707, which includes North Berkeley, have received at least one COVID-19 shot, according to the California Open Data Portal. In contrast, only about 40% of residents in the ZIP code 94704 have received at least one COVID-19 shot. Within this last area is Southside, Berkeley, which houses many campus students.
