Boehm ILLINOIS SETS JULY REOPENING DATE: Illinois is on track to fully reopen the economy in July under Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois reopening plan, with Mayor Lori Lightfoot saying her goal is to be fully open by July 4. As more Illinoisans get vaccinated against COVID-19 and hospitalizations decline, the state could soon move into the “bridge phase” the last step before a full reopening. Then, following 28 days of continued stability or decline in key COVID-19 metrics like vaccinations and hospital admissions, it would lift all capacity limits and resume large gatherings with new safety protocols.  Gov. J.B. Pritzker declined to provide a date for a full statewide reopening, but said that based on the current trajectory it will be on a similar timeline as the city of Chicago.

Professor Anup Malani among Eight UChicago Faculty Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

University News Office April 23, 2021 Professor Anup Malani was among eight members of the University of Chicago faculty elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. Malani is the Law School s Lee and Brena Freeman Professor and a professor at the Pritzker School of Medicine. He conducts research in law and economics, health economics and development economics. His research in law and economics focuses on judicial behavior, methods for measuring the contents and causal impact of laws, and the legal implications of blockchain. His health economics research focuses on control of infectious diseases (including coronaviruses and influenza), the value of medical innovation and health care insurance, conflicts of interest in medicine and placebo effects. In development economics, Malani is involved in multiple projects in India focused on health care financing and the quality of life in slums.

Study finds stereotactic body radiotherapy is safe for treating multiple metastases

 E-Mail A phase 1 clinical trial led by investigators at the University of Chicago Medicine testing the effects of stereotactic body radiotherapy for treating multiple metastases has determined that treatments used for single tumors can also be safely used for treating patients with multiple metastases. The study was run through NRG Oncology and sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. The results were published on April 22 in Cancer is traditionally treated with a combined approach, with clinicians using surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy to kill and remove cancerous tumors. Systemic treatments such as chemotherapy often are not enough to stop the cancer s growth.
