DOH reports more cases of coronavirus variants from UK, South Africa By JULIA MARI ORNEDO, GMA News Published May 11, 2021 2:02pm The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday reported additional cases of the coronavirus variants first discovered in the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7) and South Africa (B.1.351) as well as the detection of the variant from India (B.1.617). In an online forum, DOH Epidemiology Bureau director Dr. Alethea De Guzman said 46 samples were subjected to genome sequencing on May 8 to detect more variant cases. The latest run yielded 23 new B.1.351 cases, four more B.1.1.7 cases, and two cases of the B.1.617. De Guzman said the B.1.1.7 variant has already been detected in 12 regions, with 358 cases in pandemic epicenter Metro Manila and 145 cases in Calabarzon.

DOH: We do not have any procurement of remdesivir

By JULIA MARI ORNEDO, GMA News Published May 10, 2021 2:15pm Amid warnings that health officials may face charges for procuring remdesivir, the Department of Health (DOH) clarified on Monday that it cannot purchase the antiviral drug because it has not yet been registered locally. “We do not have any procurement of remdesivir precisely because it has no CPR (certificate of product registration),” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a briefing, referring to the authorization that allows the commercial sale of a drug. She explained that remdesivir is currently allowed under a compassionate special permit, which is only issued to doctors or hospitals that apply for it. The DOH gave its hospitals P5 million each in March to replenish their supply of medicines.
