The number of jobless Filipinos declined by about 747,000 last March despite the reimposition of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the so-called national capital region (NCR) plus, the country’s main economic hub.
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Thursday, May 6, that unemployment rate decelerated to 7.1 percent in March this year from 8.8 percent in the previous month.
The latest jobless rate, equivalent to 3.44 million individuals, is the lowest level since the height of the strictest community quarantine in April last year.

Poe to DOTr: Speed up distribution of payouts to displaced PUV drivers under service contracting program
Sen. Grace Poe urged the Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to put the pedal to the metal and accelerate the disbursement of the P5.58-billion service contracting program. What s supposed to be a lifeline for jeepney and bus drivers appears to be stalled due to bureaucratic traffic, said Poe, who pushed for the inclusion of the fund in Republic Act No. 11494 or the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.
Poe made the statement following the call by Move as One Coalition, a broad network of organizations and individuals involved in the fields of transportation, urban planning, and health policy, to expedite the distribution of the fund to its intended beneficiaries. According to the group, only P46.1 million or less than one percent of the fund has actually been disbursed. The availability of the app

“As our youth are digital natives who are adept in navigating online tools, we saw this opportunity to bring our student leaders at the forefront for the national campaign for Philippine Identification System that will help their fellow youth and Filipinos to access public services,” said Education Secretary Leonor Briones in a statement issued Thursday, May 6.
In line with its commitment to provide learners better public services and opportunities, DepEd spearheaded the national orientation on the PhilSys for Student Government Officers early this week.
“We are engaging our youth leaders in our National ID program to provide them better knowledge on its benefits, which includes having wider access to education and public services,” Briones said.
