MANILA: The Covid-19 variant causing a surge in India has not yet been detected in the Philippines, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said .  “So far, we have not detected in the country the Indian (B.1.617) variant yet,” she said while noting that five travellers from India were found positive for Covid upon their arrival here. Of the five, she added, only one remains isolated, while the others have already recovered. ADVERTISEMENT The Bureau of Quarantine recorded 149 passengers, including the five, with travel history from India from April 1 to 30. At least 137 have tested negative. The Department of Health is also in the process of forwarding the swab samples of the five to the Philippine Genome Center for genome sequencing.

DOH detects 678 additional cases of COVID-19 variants

(DOH) In a statement, the Health department, together with the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC), and the University of the Philippines-National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH), reported the detection of additional 289 B.1.1.7 variant cases, 380 B.1.351 variant cases, and nine P.3 variant cases from the 744 samples sequenced. The DOH said of the additional 289 B.1.1.7 variant cases detected, 48 cases are returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs), 185 are local cases, and 56 cases are currently being verified if they are local or ROF cases. “Based on the case line list, three cases remain active while two have died and 284 have recovered,” it said. Of the additional 380 B.1.351 variant cases, the DOH said, 107 cases are ROFs, 196 are local cases, and 77 cases are currently being verified if they are local or ROF cases.

As of Tuesday, May 4, 2021, a total of 2,181 cases with the variants B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P.1 and P.3 have been detected in the Philippines. These four variants accounted for nearly 37 percent of the 5,917 sequenced samples that were assigned Sars-CoV-2 lineages, the Department of Health (DOH) said. It did not specify the lineage or lineages assigned to the rest.
