BRILLIANT Within a few hours of its departure from the area behind the Wellsburg Smith Oil station where it was built, the main span of the new Ohio River bridge has reached an area just south of its future location.
The 4,100-ton structure was conveyed by four tandem barges that also are carrying about 200 tons of equipment, including six sets of hydraulic jacks, that will be used to lift the span about 80 feet over its future piers.

BRILLIANT – A series of six interlocking hydraulic jacks are slowly lifting the 4,100 ton main span of the new Ohio River bridge about 80 feet into the air so it may be lowered onto its innermost piers.
It’s a task officials with the Flatiron Corp., the bridge’s builder, said may occur early this evening.
While previously expected to occur over two days, the span’s move has been stepped up to take advantage of current environmental factors, including low wind and calm waters. The span and jacks beneath it rest on four barges that have been anchored at the site.

Bridge Float Will Be Fun to Watch

It’s not often these days that something comes along that catches the collective interest but such a happening is set to take place Monday and Tuesday on the Ohio River near Wellsburg.
Depending on the weather and river conditions, starting Monday workers with the Flatiron Corp. of Broomfield, Colorado, and supervisors with the West Virginia Department of Transportation will float the 830-foot-long main span of a new, $131 million bridge linking an area just south of Wellsburg to Brilliant, Ohio, from its staging area near Wellsburg. The float is about a mile and will allow the main span to be linked to already constructed piers in the river.
