PBCN elects new chief, council - Bird wins vote for chief, Morin stays on as Amisk Lake councillor

PBCN membership elect Bird as chief

PBCN membership elect Bird as chief The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) has elected their next chief. Karen Bird, who is from the community of Southend/Reindeer Lake has been elected to succeed Peter Beatty, who did not seek re-election. Bird finished ahead of five other candidates who were seeking the office. This was Bird’s third run for chief of PBCN and this will be her first time holding elected office. She has previously worked in administration and as a consultant. Speaking to MBC Radio News before the election, Bird said some big issues for her and her campaign were accountability and the issue of housing in the First Nation’s communities.

PBCN elects new Chief and makes history

Joyce Naytowhow-McLeod was elected Chief of Montreal Lake Cree Nation last fall, and Tammy Cook-Searson was re-elected Chief of Lac La Ronge Indian Band in May 2020. Susan Custer (Linklater), the first female Chief of PBCN, was elected in 1999 and served one term. Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte released a statement about the election results. “On behalf of the PAGC Executive, we look forward to working with the new and re-elected Chief and Council for Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation,” he said Hardlotte explained he called Chief Karen Bird first thing this morning to sent his congratulations and welcomed her to PAGC’s circle of Chiefs.

Federal court judge rules Pelican Narrows vote valid

Federal court judge rules Pelican Narrows vote valid It appears voters in the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation community of Pelican Narrows won’t be heading back to the polls after all. Chief Electoral Officer Burke Ratte had initially called for a new election in the community after votes were counted in Pelican Narrows on April 13 in violation of an election order. However, a federal court judge’s decision says the votes are valid under the band’s election act and the electoral officer does not have the right to nullify them. Ratte had ordered all PBCN communities not to tally voting results for chief and council until an election could be held in Sturgeon Landing.
