PHOENIX - For the 11th year in a row, the Phoenix Central School Districtâs (PCSD) music program earned national recognition as one of the Best Communities for Music Education.
The designation is given annually by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation to school districts that embrace music education. It takes into account the efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music part of the curriculum.
The Phoenix Central School District was one of 686 districts to earn the distinction for 2021.
âEven in the middle of a pandemic, our music program continues to shine,â said PCSD Superintendent of Schools, Christopher Byrne. âCongratulations to our music department, our students and our entire community! This honor is well-deserved and a testament to our Firebird community and their commitment to music education.â
OSWEGO COUNTY – The NAMM Foundation and University of Kansas have recognized 15 Central New York school districts that maintained their commitment to music education during the pandemic, including Oswego County’s own Mexico Academy and Central School District and Phoenix Central School District.
“Music education changed perhaps more than any other school subject when learning went virtual” is how the nationally-heard NPR program 1A began a broadcast last month. During the pandemic, maintaining a sense of “community” in New York music programs has been challenging, yet dedicated and creative music teachers, staff administrators and students, supported by a wider community, have succeeded in reinventing music instruction.
PHOENIX â While so much has changed in the past year, the kindness and compassion in the Phoenix Central School District has remained constant, and that was evident during a recent mass food donation event.
Students, staff and faculty at Michael A. Maroun Elementary launched a cereal donation effort that resulted in a domino effect â literally. As one donation came in, followed by another and another, school administrators wanted to showcase this domino effect of kindness by setting up the cereal boxes as if they were dominos. Nearly 1,050 boxes of cereal were set up and weaved throughout the school building Friday afternoon, and with one slight tap, the boxes began to fall.
