Over one thousand pounds of drugs.
That’s how much the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office has collected in their drug dropbox over the past five years.
The Sheriff’s Office installed a public-use drop box outside their office in April 2016. And throughout the years, a total of 1,103 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs and medications have been collected – providing residents with a safe and proper disposal option.
The dropbox is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and all types of unwanted drugs and medications – including illegal drugs – can anonymously be placed in the box.
Authorities say it’s a better option than throwing unwanted or expired drugs and medications in the trash and flushing them down the toilet.

St. Joseph Post
The City of St. Joseph has seen a steady rise in overdoses in the last few months.
Buchanan County Director of EMS, Steve Groshong says he believes some of the street drugs in the community have been cut with Fentanyl.
“We’ve had a couple overdoses that we found that were heroin overdoses with patients not breathing and the needle’s still stuck in their arm,” Groshong tells St. Joseph Post.
Groshong says oftentimes something tragic has already happened once EMS is called.
To help with this crisis, there are proper ways to dispose of prescriptions you are no longer taking.
