Users of the bike and walking path on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge have chosen the names for the three peregrine falcons born on the bridge earlier this spring.
Their choices were Luke Flywalker, Talon Zee and Jimmy Falcon.
This year s chicks included two females and one male, but the state did not indicate which name goes to the male.
The names pay tribute to, respectively, the Star Wars movie franchise; the Tappan Zee Bridge, which preceded the current bridge in that location; and Jimmy Fallon, who tapes his Tonight Show in Rockefeller Center.
Nearly 1,000 visitors to the bridge voted during the past two weekends. They picked their three favorite names from among 50 submitted by local elementary and middle school students.
First responders are at the scene of a crash on the New York State Thruway Saturday morning. ALBANY, N.Y. â New York State Police and another law enforcement agency issued 444 tickets during last week s Operation Hardhat, an initiative between law enforcement entities, the New York State Department of Transportation and the New York State Thruway Authority, to crack down on work zone violations and highlight the importance of safe driving when encountering construction, maintenance and emergency operations along state highways.
Operation Hardhat details were held in almost every region of New York State in support of National Work Zone Awareness Week, which took place from April 26 to April 30. The enforcement and educational efforts come as New York State continues to experience a rising number of work zone intrusions, including three recent crashes that injured six highway workers just last week.
The New York State Thruway Authority has announced the temporary closure and start of construction on May 1 for the Scotland Hill Road overpass bridge replacement project in Rockland County. The replacement is part of the $30.8 million infrastructure improvement project to replace three bridges along the I-87 corridor in the lower Hudson Valley region.
Effective May 1, 2021, the Scotland Hill Road bridge (milepost 23.62) will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for the duration of the project which is scheduled to be completed in the Fall 2021.
The College Road bridge is scheduled to close to vehicular traffic by the end of May.
