Jury trials to resume in June after a 15-month pandemic-related suspension

After more than a year without jury trials in Connecticut, the state will begin summoning potential jurors back to state courts in June. The imminent restarting of the jury trial process, suspended in March 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns, dovetails with the “virtual elimination of pandemic-related public health restrictions” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Gov. Ned Lamont, Judge Patrick L. Carroll III, the Judicial Branch’s chief court administrator, said in a press release on Tuesday. Carroll said the decision was also made amid dropping COVID-19 positivity rates and after sanitation and ventilation upgrades were made to court houses.

Email Submit East Lyme A physical altercation at a local motel led to the arrest of a North Carolina man this weekend, according to police. William T. Spencer, 42, of Oxford, N.C. was charged Saturday with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct, second-degree strangulation and second-degree unlawful restraint. Police said that Spencer is accused of assaulting the 911 caller and causing the disturbance at Motel 6 on Flanders Road. Police said officers responding to the 911 call about a possible altercation at the motel found the suspect had fled in a silver Chevrolet Malibu. The car was located at the Niantic Star gas station with Spencer inside, police said.

NEW LONDON - During the first in-person court proceeding in a Griswold triple-murder case in months, a New London Superior Court judge on Wednesday again denied the defense’s motions for a speedy trial and a change of venue while also quashing a request to halt a warrant application submitted by the state. The afternoon hearing before Judge Hunchu Kwak was convened to deal with several “housekeeping issues” left unresolved or that had arisen since a suppression hearing in October, said Attorney Joseph Lopez. Lopez, along with co-councilor Corey Mainville, is representing 29-year-old Sergio Correa on murder, robbery, arson and other charges related to the brutal slayings of Kenneth, Janet and Matthew Lindquist in 2017.
