On Tuesday, attorneys filed an amended complaint against the New Hanover County Schools district, including new plaintiffs and new allegations against former teacher Micheal Earl Kelly and former administrators. The lawsuit, filed in the wake of Kelly s sentencing, deals both with criminal sexual misconduct and abuse for which Kelly has been convicted, and also allegations. The suit seeks to hold NHCS responsible for Kelly s actions as well as negligence by top administrators in supervising Kelly and intervening when they were allegedly notified of his behavior.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Former New Hanover County Schools teacher Michael Kelly is already serving time in prison for sex crimes committed against students. Now, three more alleged victims have joined a pending lawsuit against the school board, and staff members.
During a Tuesday morning hearing, a judge granted the request to amend the complaint allowing the new plaintiffs to join the lawsuit, bringing the total number of victims up to 13. Along with the new plaintiffs come new allegations, this time, one of the anonymous plaintiffs claims Kelly gave him alcohol and even drugged him, before raping him.
As COVID-19 vaccine trials continue in age groups younger than 16, local school districts and health departments plan to work together to encourage families to get their children vaccinated once it becomes available.
But the vaccine won’t be required for now. Once a vaccine for younger age groups is approved by the FDA, schools may treat it like the flu shot, said Kristin Jackson, student support services director for New Hanover County Schools. It will be encouraged, but not required.
North Carolina requires students to have several vaccines to enroll in K-12 schools, including for Polio, measles, chickenpox, and several others. Vaccines are required prior to kindergarten, seventh grade and 12th grade.
