One of the task force recommendations would require installation of electric vehicle charging station infrastructure in all new city construction projects and parking facilities.
The City of Wilmington has established a list of priorities and goals designed to reduce its carbon footprint within 30 years. The plans were approved by City Council at this week’s meeting.
The clean energy goals were recommended by the city’s Ad Hoc Clean Energy Task Force. That task force was established in March 2020, with the aim of setting achievable clean energy objectives. The team released its report in January 2021.

The approved resolution will adopt the goals listed as part of that report which include a 50% transition from fossil fuels to clean energy by the year 2035, and a 100% transition by 2050. Both initiatives apply to municipal operations, as well as the city’s vehicle fleet.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Following a decision by the New Hanover County Board of Education April 13 to rename the football stadium at Laney High School, board members are seeking community input.
The board voted unanimously to remove Dr. Rick Holliday’s name from the stadium. Holliday, a former principal at Laney who retired as the school system’s deputy superintendent in 2019, allegedly failed to act on information about potential wrongdoing by a teacher accused of sex crimes against students.
A district-wide survey that will look at how middle and high school students in New Hanover feel about sexual harassment and discrimination will go before the Board of Education for approval soon.
The survey, created by the district s Title IX committee, will ask students questions about sexual harassment, gender-based discrimination, bystander intervention and other similar topics in the school district. Administrators say they hope the survey will give them a better understanding of the climate and conversation around these issues from the district s student body as a whole.
“I think we ve realized that we need to do a better job of actually listening and engaging our students,” said Jarelle Lewis, New Hanover County Schools Title IX coordinator. “We re looking at ways to approach our students to hear what they re experiencing, what their thoughts are.”
The Brigade Boys and Girls Club has named NiJel Thomas its 2020 Youth of the Year.
The 74-year tradition recognizes local youth for their exemplary leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to a healthy lifestyle. Thomas was previously a finalist for the award in 2019, the club announced in a news release Thursday. When I think of all the qualities I admire most in an individual, perseverance, determination, dependability, leadership, and integrity, I think of Nijel,” New Hanover County Brigade Boys and Girls Club Executive Keith Whitaker is quoted as saying in the release. “This young man will be successful in life not only because of the previous mentioned qualities but because he genuinely cares for others and the well-being of the whole.”
