Ingenuity Mars Helicopter makes first one-way trip on fifth test flight

NASA/JPL-Caltech NASA s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter has successfully flown for the fifth time. The tiny autonomous rotorcraft lifted off from Wright Brothers Field in Jezero Crater on the Red Planet for a 108-second flight that took it on a one-way trip to a new airfield 423 ft (129 m) to the south. The latest flight by Ingenuity on May 7, 2021 at 3:26 pm EDT not only marks the start of a more ambitious phase of its testing program, but also produced more aerospace firsts. Where the previous flights focused on the technology of the robotic helicopter, the new phase will look more at possible applications for future planetary missions.

Mars helicopter is flying one-way to a new destination

Mars helicopter successfully flies to a new destination CNN 23 hrs ago By Ashley Strickland, CNN © NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory The Perseverance rover captured this image of Ingenuity flying through the air on May 7 during its fifth flight. It s the little chopper that could. After four historic flights, the Ingenuity Mars helicopter successfully flew to a new destination. The 4-pound chopper conducted a one-way flight to its new airfield on Friday. As with previous flights, Ingenuity took off from Wright Brothers Field, but it s not coming back. This time, Ingenuity ascended 16 feet (5 meters) in the air and flew 423 feet (129 meters) south. This retraces the path the helicopter made during its fourth flight while scouting for the next location.

NASA s Perseverance Captures Video, Audio of Fourth Ingenuity Flight – NASA s Mars Exploration Program

NASA s Perseverance Captures Video, Audio of Fourth Ingenuity Flight Sounds of the Mars Helicopter’s whirring rotors add another new dimension to the historic project. For the first time, a spacecraft on another planet has recorded the sounds of a separate spacecraft. NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover used one of its two microphones to listen as the Ingenuity helicopter flew for the fourth time on April 30, 2021. A new video combines footage of the solar-powered helicopter taken by Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z imager with audio from a microphone belonging to the rover’s SuperCam laser instrument. The laser zaps rocks from a distance, studying their vapor with a spectrometer to reveal their chemical composition. The instrument’s microphone records the sounds of those laser strikes, which provide information on the physical properties of the targets, such as their relative hardness. The microphone can also record ambient noise, like the Martian wind.

Ingenuity s Color Camera Spies Helicopter s New Airfield – NASA s Mars Exploration Program

May 06, 2021 NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter took this color image during its fourth flight, on April 30, 2021. “Airfield B,” its new landing site, can be seen below. The helicopter will seek to set down there on its fifth flight attempt. An unannotated version of the image has also been provided. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter was built by JPL, which also manages the technology demonstration project for NASA Headquarters. It is supported by NASA’s Science, Aeronautics Research, and Space Technology mission directorates. NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, and NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, provided significant flight performance analysis and technical assistance during Ingenuity’s development. AeroVironment Inc., Qualcomm, and SolAero also provided design assistance and major vehicle components. Lockheed Martin Space designed and manufactured the Mars Helicopter Delivery System.
