Delhi shuts down 100 Covaxin vaccination sites due to no supply
Covaxin-maker Bharat Biotech has written to Delhi government expressing its inability to make any “additional supplies” of vaccine as required by the national capital, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said on Wednesday.
This vaccine-maker has cited limited availability of vaccine in wake of huge demand and dispatches being made according to directives of concerned government officials (Central government) as reasons for its inability to make the additional supplies, Sisodia said at a press conference while reading out the Bharat Biotech letter.
Delhi had given an order for 67 lakh doses of Covaxin after the Centre liberalised the process to allow States to directly procure 50 per cent of its requirement from vaccine manufacturers. Oxford-AstraZeneca s Covishield is being manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India.

Amid multiple states reporting a shortage of COVID-19 vaccine, Serum Institute and Bharat Biotech have submitted to the Centre their production plan for the next four months, informing they can ramp it up to 10 crore and 7.8 crore doses respectively by August, official sources said on Wednesday.
The sources said the Union Health Ministry and the office of Drugs Controller General of India had sought from both the firms their production plan for June, July, August and September.
The Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech s indigenously developed Covaxin and Oxford-AstraZeneca s Covishield, being manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India, are currently being used in India s inoculation drive against coronavirus.

‘Centre should help other cos to get know-how from existing vaccine-makers; allow royalty to be paid’
To meet the high demand of Covid vaccines in the country, the Centre should enable more companies to manufacture these vaccines for the benefit of the people of the country.
Addressing a digital press conference, AAP supremo and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the know-how on the manufacture of Covid vaccines currently available only with Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech could be shared with other firms and appropriate royalty be paid to the current two firms.
Currently, there are only two vaccine makers in India – Pune-based Serum Institute of India, which manufactures Covishield and Bharat Biotech, which manufactures Covaxin.
