WPBF 25 News has learned new details about the upcoming statewide online vaccination appointment registration system that is expected to launch in the coming weeks. The state is actively collaborating with counties and local officials to launch a system that will include a streamlined vaccination appointment process, said Samantha Bequer, the press secretary for the Florida Division of Emergency Management. This will be an opt in system for counties that want to utilize it and is expected to launch in the coming weeks. Additional details will be released as we get closer to the launch date. A coronavirus vaccine distribution event had been scheduled at Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she works as an executive assistant. State strike teams were to inoculate 500 people at the West Palm Beach house of worship on Saturday.
But just days before, she and staff at their sister organization, U.B. Kinsey Educational and Community Center, were tasked with fielding phone calls from people frantically seeking the shot and scheduling the hundreds of appointments.
“Right now, I’m overrun,” she told a reporter on Wednesday morning. By the next day, predictably, the appointments were filled.
Floridians, especially seniors, are one step closer to being protected from scams relating to the COVID vaccine.
The first bill approved by a newly created legislative committee on the pandemic would make it a felony for someone to fraudulently charge someone for offering to put them at the front of the vaccine line.
Reports of vaccine scams are growing.
Jared Moskowitz is the Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management and is in charge of the vaccine distribution network.
“People are trying to set up fake calendars, fake appointments. You know, we have foreign actors trying to hack systems. I mean, it’s just the worst of society,” said Moskowitz.
