TAMPA, Fla. â Younger kids in the Tampa Bay area rolled up their sleeves Thursday for Pfizerâs COVID-19 vaccine. Local vaccination sites started giving shots to kids as young as 12 years old after the CDC gave its approval on Wednesday.
âIt was just a little pinch,â said 12-year-old Luke Martinez-Monfort. âIt just reminds you of the normal flu shot. Nothing too big.â
Martinez-Monfort is in sixth grade and showed up with his mom to the Raymond James vaccination site in Tampa for a dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday.

MIAMI, Fla. – CVS Health was quick to announce Wednesday that it would begin administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to adolescents ages 12 to 15 in 640 locations across Florida now that emergency use authorization for that age group is moving forward.
CVS encourages appointments be made online at cvs.com or through the CVS Pharmacy app to ensure availability, but walk-ins are also accepted, according to a spokesperson.
Also, officials at the Florida Division of Emergency Management are expecting that it will begin distributing the vaccine Thursday at its sites.
“They will come to the health departments and they will come to some of the pharmacies in the community, but they can do very few,” Bencie said.
State officials attributed the closure of the sites to low demand, according to an email newsletter from the city of Sarasota.
However, the state-run testing site at the Bradenton Area Convention Center is still conducting between 800 to 1,000 tests a day and seeing “well over” 10% positivity rates on the rapid tests, according to Bencie.
The three local COVID-19 testing sites that will close are at the convention center on 1 Haben Boulevard in Palmetto, which will close Saturday; the walk-up testing site at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 34th Street in Sarasota, which will end Friday; and the drive-through site at 5400 Bradenton Road at the Sarasota Kennel Club, which will close on Sunday.
