Counsellor puts focus on Black mental health, empowerment through self care When Nicole Franklin opened Live Free Counselling Services in Toronto in 2016, she had a specific vision for what she wanted to create. She’d completed her Masters of Social Work at Ryerson University, researching the experiences of young Black girls in Canadian society, and had worked with youth in Kingston and Toronto. Now she was ready to build her own space. “A lot of my practice at Live Free is based on some hard experiences in life,” Franklin said. A noticeably calm and positive person, Franklin specializes in counselling services for families, youth and women. She said being a Black woman with her own practice also gave her another early and unexpected differentiator when starting out.

Hannaford Makes New Education Donations

Hannaford Supermarkets has announced a new round of donations designed to support education. The food retailer and the Hannaford Charitable Foundation earmarked $400,000 in donations to support virtual learning and after-school programs for families throughout New England and New York impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The donation will support the work of 20 child development non-profit organizations in their efforts to meet an increased level of need and provide expanded childcare programs to families during the pandemic, including full-day remote learning centers for students while their caregivers are at work.

Although the pandemic and a recent stay-at-home provincial order have posed unique challenges to organizing the campaign, the clubs worked with Primetime Custom, a local custom apparel manufacturer, to adapt the traditional campaign logistics.

I didn’t have the option to stay home because of my work. I was freaking out,” says Anna, single mom of six-year-old Mia, and a front-line worker at Rosewood Retirement Residence.
