House fire in Benton Harbor leaves one person dead By: Maura Johnson BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. – One person has died following a house fire in Benton Harbor Monday evening, the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety reported. At 6:49 p.m., the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety was called to a house fire in the 1100 block of McAlister Ave. in Benton Harbor. Upon arriving, safety officers saw heavy smoke coming from the downstairs apartment and heavy flames coming from the rear of the building. Bystanders told firefighters there was at least one person in the downstairs apartment, reports said. Both BHDPS and the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety made their way into the lower apartment and found a woman inside.

It happened just before 6:50 p.m. at 1111 McAlister St., the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety said Tuesday. Public safety officers say they saw heavy smoke coming from the downstairs apartment when they arrived, as well as heavy flames coming from the back of the residence. Bystanders told firefighters that there was at least one person in the downstairs apartment. Benton Harbor and St. Joseph public safety officers immediately went into the lower apartment and found a woman inside.

Fatal house fire under investigation in Benton Harbor BENTON HARBOR, Mich. Officials are investigating a fatal house fire that occurred on April 6, according to the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety. First responders were sent to a home in the 100 block of S. Hull around 4:35 a.m. on April 6. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home to be fully engulfed in flames and the roof had already collapsed inward. A witness reported to firefighters that two people were possibly in the home. Once the fire was under control, officers searched the home and found two victims. The fire remains under investigation and police have not released the names of the victims.
