Taishi Nakase selected as Princeton valedictorian, Lucy Wang named salutatorian

Taishi Nakase, an operations research and financial engineering concentrator from Melbourne, Australia, has been selected as valedictorian of Princeton’s Class of 2021. Lucy Wang, a chemistry concentrator from Marietta, Georgia, was named salutatorian.
The Princeton faculty accepted the nominations of the Faculty Committee on Examinations and Standing at its April 26 meeting.
Commencement for the Class of 2021 will take place at Princeton Stadium on Sunday, May 16. Nakase and Wang are expected to give remarks at the ceremony.

Nakase plans to become a doctor and is interested in using mathematical modeling to confront global health challenges. After Princeton, he will pursue a master of science in modeling for global health at Oxford University before attending medical school.

Janice E. Watterworth, 85, of East Windsor, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center at Plainsboro. Born in West Chester, PA and raised in Fredonia, NY; Janice was a resident of East Windsor for the past 35 years.
Janice earned two advanced degrees, a BA in History from the University of Rochester and MS in Library Science from Louisiana State University. She worked as a librarian for both Columbia and Princeton Universities before beginning a 25 year career with Mathematica Policy Research in Princeton, retiring in 2011. She was an active member and Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Hightstown and was proud of her service to TASK, the League of Woman’s Voters, Red Cross and her time as a docent for the NJ State Capital Building. Gabriel Stelian, 87, of Lawrenceville passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center of Plainsboro, NJ. Gabriel was born in Arad, Romania from which he escaped in 1966 along with his wife and son. They lived in Rome before coming to the US in December of the same year to settle in the Philadelphia area.
Gabe was employed by Certain-Teed as a Manager of Industrial Engineering. He had a Masters in both Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and also taught at Drexel University. Gabe loved opera, having served on the board of the Princeton Festival for over a decade. He and his wife Judy saw Rigoletto over 180 times, but Gabe was actually most passionate about Wagner’s Ring Cycle, having visited Bayreuth for their Wagner Festival several times. He and Judy traveled extensively and enjoyed classical music concerts and theater in addition to opera. As a lover of language, Gabe spoke 7 of them.
