The Keystone Trails Association (KTA) and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources awards the State Forest Trails Award to anyone who hikes all 798 miles of 17 trails in Pennsylvania’s state forest.
The KTA launched an annual Hiking Awards Program in 1961 to recognize hikers “whose enjoyment of Pennsylvania’s trails might serve as an example and inspiration to their peers.
New nature preserve launches with 230 acres of Susquehanna Riverlands in York County

The Lancaster Conservancy recently preserved 270 acres of forested land in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, creating a new nature preserve. It will be named for the Reist family that has owned the tract for more than 100 years.
The new Reist Nature Preserve connects to a 1,000-acre-plus corridor of Susquehanna Riverlands, contiguously protected natural lands that include Susquehannock State Park, State Game Lands 181 and Brookfield Renewable land donated to the Conservancy as part of a large landscape protection effort.
It includes an important part of the viewshed across Lake Aldred from popular Conservancy preserves like Tucquan Glen & Pyfer, House Rock, Reed Run and Pinnacle Overlook.

The Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers recently announced the recipients of its 2021 Pennsylvania River Sojourn Grants, which annually support 10-20 paddling events across the state.
Sojourns are more than a paddle down a river or stream, they annually incorporate more than 100 educational programs and engage more than 4,000 people as they cover more than 500 river miles in more than 50 days on the water.
Loyalhanna Watershed Association for the 7th annual Loyalhanna Sojourn on the Loyalhanna Creek scheduled for May 1.
Middle Spring Watershed Association for the Conodoguinet Creek Sojourn on the Conodoguinet Creek scheduled for May 21-23.

“In Pennsylvania, these destructive, invasive insects go through cycles where outbreaks occur every five to 10 years,” said DCNR Forest Health Manager Dr. Donald Eggen. “Populations had declined in years past thanks to the gypsy moth fungus disease and wet spring weather but that no longer is the case for 2021.”
The gypsy moth suppression program is conducted with the goal of preventing defoliation so that trees do not become stressed and succumb to disease, other insect pests, or drought, the DCNR said.
Aerial spraying will be conducted by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft.
Targeted sites are determined by surveys of egg masses and other indicators across the state indicating gypsy moth populations are increasing and have the potential to cause major defoliation.
