A soft opening is planned this spring for the $1.5 million Babcock Nature Center in Buffalo Township, under construction off Monroe Road next to the Butler-Freeport Community Trail.
A collaboration between the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and Buffalo Township, the new 2,500-square-foot center and a 1,200-square-foot pavilion will offer programming, restrooms, refreshments, food, trail parking and more. Audubon plans to work on educational opportunities at the center and its environs with local districts and residents, as well.

Lakes in state parks across Pennsylvania often are surrounded by woodland that creeps right up to the shoreline in many spots, providing an idyllic setting for a bit of ice skating.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources lists ice skating as an activity available in 47 state parks.
Most parks are described as skating “permitted on the natural ice of the lake as conditions permit.” Some monitor the thickness of the ice, which can be checked on the DCNR State Parks Winter Report.
A handful of parks go a bit further by designating and maintaining areas of their lakes for skating, even to the extent of providing lighting at night. Here’s a look at those 14:

As the U.S. Forest Service has opened up ATV and off-road vehicle permits for the Allegheny National Forest, the state reports that its licenses for these sports vehicles continue to trend upwards.
The U.S. Forest Service offers permits for off-road vehicles to use federal forests, including the region’s closest federal lands, the Allegheny National Forest. Meanwhile, the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources issues its permits year-round for residents to operate off-road vehicles wherever they are permissible in the state.
