Real Estate stocks were trading with losses, with the S&P BSE Realty Index index falling 186.27 points or 7.06% at 2453.65 at 13:49 IST. Among the components of the S&P BSE Realty Index index, DLF Ltd (down 9.8%), Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd (down 8.43%),Sobha Ltd (down 8.33%),Godrej Properties Ltd (down 6.73%),Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd (down 6.52%), were the top losers. Among the other losers were Prestige Estates Projects Ltd (down 6.09%), Sunteck Realty Ltd (down 5.89%), Oberoi Realty Ltd (down 5.73%), Brigade Enterprises Ltd (down 3.86%), and Phoenix Mills Ltd (down 3.38%).
At 13:49 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 1741.92 or 3.51% at 47849.4.
The Nifty 50 index was down 526.6 points or 3.55% at 14308.25.
Equity indices were trading near the day s low with heavy losses in mid-afternoon trade. The Nifty was trading below 14,350 level. Investors sentiment was dented as COVID-19 cases continued to surge in the country.
At 14:26 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, slumped 1,677 points or 3.38% at 47,913.76. The Nifty 50 index tanked 507.85 points or 3.42% at 14,327.65.
The broader market tanked. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index lost 4.83% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index tumbled 4.27%.
Sellers outnumbered buyers. On the BSE, 456 shares rose and 2,249 shares fell. A total of 169 shares were unchanged.

Metal stocks were trading with gains, with the S&P BSE Metal index increasing 198.67 points or 1.3% at 15471.26 at 09:49 IST. Among the components of the S&P BSE Metal index, JSW Steel Ltd (up 2.88%), Steel Authority of India Ltd (up 2.84%),National Aluminium Company Ltd (up 2.6%),Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (up 1.54%),Tata Steel Ltd (up 1.03%), were the top gainers. Among the other gainers were Hindalco Industries Ltd (up 0.91%), Coal India Ltd (up 0.81%), Vedanta Ltd (up 0.15%), and Hindustan Zinc Ltd (up 0.08%).
At 09:49 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 333.45 or 0.68% at 49492.77.
The Nifty 50 index was up 104.5 points or 0.71% at 14742.3.
The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was up 181.11 points or 0.87% at 21026.1.

Trading of Nifty 50 index futures on the Singapore stock exchange indicates that the Nifty could fall 9 points at the opening bell.
Global markets:
Overseas, Asian stocks are trading mixed on Tuesday, after major indexes on Wall Street surged to record closing highs overnight stateside. Markets in Hong Kong are closed today for a holiday.
China s services sector activity grew in March, according to a private sector survey released Tuesday. The Caixin/Markit services Purchasing Managers Index for March came in at 54.3, as compared to February s reading of 51.5.
U.S. stocks rallied on Monday with the Dow and S&P 500 closing at record levels, as a round of strong economic data buoyed investor optimism for the economic reopening.
The benchmark indices sharply pared gains in afternoon trade as selling emerged at higher levels. At 13:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, fell 4.97 points or 0.01% at 49,154.35. The Nifty 50 index rose 24.35 points or 0.17% at 14,662.15.
Asian Paints (up 3.62%), HDFC (up 0.92%) and Hindustan Unilever (up 1.12%) supported the indices.
The broader market traded higher. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.94%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index added 0.71%.
Buyers outnumbered sellers. On the BSE, 1,666 shares rose and 1,090 shares fell. A total of 166 shares were unchanged.
COVID-19 Update:
Total COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide stood at 13,18,28,728 with 28,61,100 deaths. India reported 7,88,223 active cases of COVID-19 infection and 1,65,547 deaths while 1,17,32,279 patients have been discharged, according to the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
