Hawthorne NJ election: GOP council primary pits 6 candidates

View Comments HAWTHORNE Six candidates, including two incumbents, are vying for half as many Republican nominations in a Borough Council primary on Tuesday. Councilmen Bruce Bennett and Dominic Mele formed a team with Anna Marie Sasso, a real estate broker. They are being challenged by Michael Doyle, a former school board trustee, and Jay Shortway, whose family has owned the eponymous bar and restaurant on Goffle Road for decades. Rounding out the crowded field is Philip Speulda, a retired businessman. Next week s GOP showdown reflects only part of the interest in three vacancies on the seven-person council. Each at-large seat comes with a four-year term.

The district’s two Assembly members, Gordon Johnson and Valerie Vainieri Huttle, will duke it out June 8 to win their party’s nomination to succeed Sen. Loretta Weinberg, who is retiring in January. Weinberg never faced a Democratic challenger during her five Senate campaigns. The sheer longevity of Weinberg and her predecessors and the largely Democratic makeup of the district help explain why the contest has become so fierce: The primary winner will likely win in November and stay in the seat for as long as they want.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announces the following information: The Bergen County Prosecutor s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the Bergen County Sheriff s Office are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash on Route 17 South, north of the Route 80 interchange, in Lodi. At approximately 3:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2021, the Lodi Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff s Office were notified that a motor vehicle had struck a pedestrian in the area of 240 Route 17 South. The 38-year-old pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. Subscribe An investigation into the circumstances of the motor vehicle crash is being conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Bergen County Sheriff s Office under the direction of Sheriff Anthony Cureton.
