Local health officials celebrated a milestone this week, with sights firmly set on eventually reaching a level of herd immunity.
“We are pleased to share the news that more than 50 per cent of adult residents (ages 18 and over) in the PHU area have received at least the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine,” Dr. Lianne Catton, medical officer of health for the Porcupine Health Unit, reported on Monday.
PHU bucking the provincial trend of fewer new COVID-19 cases; 29 reported today

The Porcupine Health Unit region is obviously not following the provincial downward trend in COVID-19 infections. It reports another 29 today, for a running total of 769. There are 165 cases that are currently active.
All but two of today’s new cases are in Timmins. There is also one somewhere between Fauquier and Opasatika, and one between Smooth Rock Falls and Matheson.
BY THE NUMBERS
Yesterday, the Porcupine Health Unit reported thirteen new confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Eleven cases are from the Timmins area and two are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, Smooth Rock Falls. Ten cases are contacts of a case and three are under investigation.

Over the last 14 months, there have been 734 cases in the area. With 26 deaths and 566 recovered Dr. Lianne Catton, Medical Officer of Health for the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU), announced “We are pleased to share the news that more than 50 percent of adult residents (18+) in the PHU area have received at least the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.”

Timmins continues to be the COVID-19 epicentre of the Porcupine Health Unit region.
Of the 13 new cases reported today, eleven are in the city. The rest are somewhere along the Highway 11 corridor between Smooth Rock Falls and Matheson. Twenty-nine cases moved into the “resolved” category over the weekend.
The total since the pandemic began is now 734.
