Commissioner Hardesty Introduces Budget Amendment to Address Pedestrian Deaths

Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty has announced a last-minute update to the city's proposed 2021-22 budget to expand funding for traffic safety projects. The budget amendment, which will need City Council's approval, proposes using $450,000 of the city's general fund to subsidize several specific Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) projects to combat the recent surge of pedestrian deaths caused by vehicles. According to PBOT, the city has seen a 47 percent increase in traffic.

Community activists cautiously optimistic following ODOT, PBOT plan for 82nd Avenue safety

Community activists cautiously optimistic following ODOT, PBOT plan for 82nd Avenue safety Allison Mechanic, KATU Staff © Provided by KATU Portland Responsibility for one of the most dangerous roadways in Portland could be changing hands from the Oregon Department of Transportation to the Portland Bureau of Transportation. This is really a critical step in 82nd Avenue, said Don Hamilton, a spokesman for ODOT. We’re going to make some significant changes with the city on this. We have agreed with the city about what needs to be done and agreed about how we are going to go about doing that. While the agencies are considering this a promising event, those who use the roadway every day aren t celebrating just yet. They want all the proposed changes promised, but they re concerned something could fall through, since the state Legislature needs to put in millions and sign off on it.
