Five storylines from MLB s first month of the season

The Yankees look like the Orioles When the Yankees showed up at Camden Yards on Monday night, they had shown a hint that a turnaround was possible. New York opened the season 5-10, the franchise’s worst start since 1997. But after winning three of four games against the Cleveland Indians, the Baltimore Orioles dropped the Yankees back to last place in the American League East on Monday night. Entering the season, New York was considered one of the World Series challengers, with starting pitcher Gerrit Cole and outfielders Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton as dominant stars. The Yankees still could be, but the pieces haven’t aligned yet. Entering Tuesday night, the Bronx Bombers held a .348 slugging percentage the worst in the league and led only the Detroit Tigers with an OPS of .650.

Cleveland never looked back once they gained the lead, riding on an excellent performance from the bullpen to defeat the Bronx Bombers by the final score of 7-3. Tristan McKenzie struggled with his command on Sunday afternoon, falling behind in the count against a dangerous Yankees lineup. McKenzie gave up two home runs for 3 earned runs, and was pulled following the fourth inning. The Cleveland bullpen combined for 5 shutout innings, including stellar performances from the youngsters James Karinchak and and Emmanuel Clase.

Slumping Yankees rally from early hole to down Indians 6-3

CLEVELAND (AP) — Rougned Odor’s two-out, two-run single broke a seventh-inning tie — and maybe jarred New York from its hitting funk — and sent the Yankees to a 6-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series. Odor was batting just .107 and in a 3-for-28 slide when he came up against Nick Wittgren (0-1). He slapped his single through the middle to score Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres to break a 3-3 tie as the Yankees got just their second win in eight games. Kyle Higashioka homered in the eighth for New York, which entered with its worst record to open a season since 1991, when Stump Merrill managed and Don Mattingly manned first base.
