Rhinelander Man Indicted in Federal Court for Child Related Sex Crimes

A federal grand jury indicted a Rhinelander man Tuesday on three charges related to child sex crimes. Police say they found evidence that Paul Osterman, 35, solicited sex with a 13-year-old from Illinois on the MeetMe social media site. The first count accuses Osterman of soliciting child sex in exchange for money in July 2019. The second and third counts accuse him of traveling to Illinois from Wisconsin with purpose of engaging in sex with a child. If convicted on either of the first two counts, Osterman could be sentenced up to life in prison. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006, by the U.S. Department of Justice. A Lehigh Acres man convicted as a sex offender in 2011 was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in federal prison for possessing images and videos of the sexual abuse of children. U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell handed down the sentence for Steven Thomas Baryla, 39. He pleaded guilty in January to the charges. Baryla, who was convicted on federal charges of transporting child pornography in New Jersey in 2011, was also sentenced to a lifetime term of supervised release and ordered to register as a sex offender. According to court documents, Baryla knowingly possessed child sexual abuse images and videos that he had obtained from the internet; he also accessed similar images depicting children engaged in sexually explicit conduct via social media applications such as Kik and Snapchat.

Jonathan Monson, 39, was sentenced in federal court in Springfield on Friday, according to a statement Monday from the U.S. attorney’s office in Boston. He was convicted by a jury in October of four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, eight counts of distribution of child pornography, two counts of receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography. Monson produced sexually explicit images and videos of a child on four occasions in 2017 and 2018, prosecutors said. The images and videos were found on his cellphone.

Jefferson County man sentenced in Darknet child porn case

From The Tribune staff reports BIRMINGHAM A Jefferson County man who pleaded guilty to child porn charges, was sentenced to 78 months in prison followed by 15 years of supervised release. James Curtis Brasher, 49, of Warrior, reached a plea deal admitting to accessing the Darknet through the use of the Tor app. Prosecutors said he obtained over 58,000 images of child pornography, including images of children under 12. United States District Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala also ordered Brasher to pay $69,000.00 in restitution to the victims. He will also have to register as a sex offender. FBI Birmingham’s Child Exploitation Human Trafficking Task Force (CEHTTF) investigated the case,  with the assistance of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and Warrior Police Department.  Assistant United States Attorney R. Leann White prosecuted the case.
