Welch: Federal funds will have lasting impact locally

Like us on Facebook.   BRATTLEBORO — The $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package, known as the American Rescue Plan, is set to bring $3.3 million to the town over the course of the next year. “You know in Brattleboro just what you had to contend with,” U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., said at the Select Board meeting held remotely Tuesday. “We’ve been through a lot.” Welch said the local school district, Windham Southeast School District, will receive $9.4 million through the federal package. He noted there’s flexibility around uses for the funding, which he believes will have “a lasting impact” over the next few years.

Like us on Facebook.   BRATTLEBORO — Wichie Artu hopes the success of vaccination clinics reaching racial groups disproportionately affected by COVID-19 is used as a model in future health initiatives and infrastructure. “I plan to be in conversations with different racial justice organizations in Vermont including in those places that usually don’t have advocacy,” said Artu, who is second vice president of the Windham County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. “It’s just got to keep going.” Work towards a more equitable health care system doesn’t stop after the COVID-19 pandemic, Artu said. He noted the Vermont Legislature is considering a bill that would create the Office of Health Equity.

Related Company:  Vermont Business Magazine Imaging Technologists at Vermont’s largest Hospital, the University of Vermont Medical Center, voted overwhelmingly to join the Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals-AFT-Vermont. The final vote count was 123-32 in favor of unionizing.  The 230 technologists include sonographers, cardiac technicians, interventional radiologists, and technologists working within CT Scan, MRI, Diagnostic Xray, Nuclear Medicine, and Mammography.
