Ellicott City, Maryland – A former Maryland police chief is accused of setting a dozen fires in various counties over the last ten years. David M. Crawford, 69, was arrested Wednesday on numerous arson and attempted murder charges, the Prince George’s County Fire Department said. Crawford allegedly set vehicles, homes and residential garages on fire in a string of arsons from 2011 to 2020 according to NBC News.
Many of the fires happened early in the morning and involved a suspect wearing a sweatshirt with a hood drawn tightly around their face and carrying gallon jugs filled with gasoline. Following the last known fire in 2020, investigators discovered a connection with each victim and to Crawford.

After David Crawford left his job as the police chief of Laurel, Md., in 2010, he spent the next decade nursing grudges and setting fires to punish others, investigators say. In a stunning turn of events, Crawford, a law enforcement veteran, is now under arrest and facing dozens of charges in connection to at least 12 fires at homes, garages and cars.
Crawford was a serial arsonist, according to the Prince George s County Fire/EMS Department. It adds that investigators suspicions about Crawford were confirmed when a search of his house turned up a target list of fire victims on his cellphone.

The “target list” found on David M. Crawford’s cellphone pointed to a former police chief consumed with grievances in his personal and professional life, the authorities said.
It named, among others, two doctors who had treated Mr. Crawford for a back injury, a woman who had led a training program for Mr. Crawford’s wife that discussed “white privilege,” and three former police officials who had served with Mr. Crawford during his career of more than three decades in Maryland law enforcement.
