Angry protesters in Syunik greet Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan who made an unannounced trip to the region on April 21
YEREVAN (Azatutyun.am) Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan faced on Wednesday furious protesters blaming him for grave consequences of last year’s war in Nagorno-Karabakh during an impromptu visit to Armenia’s southeastern Syunik province.
Video reports showed local residents swearing at Pashinyan, branding him a “capitulator” and “traitor” and demanding that he leave their community as he walked through Agarak, a small town on the Armenian-Iranian border.
“You are the capitulators,” Pashinyan shouted back.
“We are going to sort this out as well. Dear people, I apologize to you for these types,” he said, appealing to other Agarak residents through a megaphone.

President Armen Sarkissian is on a fact finding mission to the Syunik Province
Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan on Tuesday renewed his calls for the establishment of a “security zone” in Armenia’s Syunik Province as a means to guarantee the rights of the Armenian citizens living in border villages.
Tatoyan, who has accompanied President Armen Sarkissian on a fact finding mission to the region reiterated his position saying “illegal” Azerbaijani troop deployment in the area threatens the lives of local residents.
Tatoyan said that he and President Sarkissian had meetings in the Khnatsakh village, and highlighted the restoration of the rights of the villagers as a priority objective. In his words, these rights were violated as a result of “the Azerbaijani Armed Forces appearing in the direct vicinity of the village”.
