Government has back down the wishes of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings to still name the University of Development Studies (UDS) after him.
Mr Rawlings while alive declined the offer to have the UDS re-named after him.
But delivering his tribute at the final funeral rite of Mr Rawlings at the Black Star square in Accra on Wednesday, 27 January 2021, President Akufo-Addo insisted that Mr Rawlings deserves such an honour despite his reservation.
He said Mr Rawlings’ family had agreed to his proposal and the necessary formalities will be carried out to name the university after Ghana’s longest serving head of state.

President Akufo-Addo has said he believes history will be kind to the late President Jerry John Rawlings following the latter’s role in Ghana’s democratic development.
This comes on the back of fears expressed by Former President John Mahama insisting that there will be attempts to twist history to denigrate the late President Rawlings following his demise.
“I dare say that with J.J’s passing the revisionists of our history will commence their work again to try and denigrate the history of his life and work. That is what I say unless those of us who knew him and worked with him document his life and works for posterity, then historians of the hunter will write it for us,” Mr Mahama said during a speech at a public lecture in honour of the late founder of the NDC.

President Akufo-Addo has likened the late former President Jerry John Rawlings to a meteor that never burst and disintegrates as all meteors do.
He said the former president remained “potent until the very end of its life, leaving strong footprints in the sands of time”.
Describing him as an energetic, charismatic and a fearless leader, Akufo Addo says Rawlings showed his true leadership when he stood up before the military trial and took full responsibility for the failed coup attempt whiles asking that his colleagues be let off the hook.

Rawlings to be buried today LISTEN

The mortal remains of the late ex-President Jerry John Rawlings will be laid to rest today at the Military Cemetery, in Accra.
This will be preceded by a state burial service at the Black Star Square, climaxing a four-day elaborate state funeral.
The burial service will be attended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and some heads of states in the sub-region.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions, the burial service is expected to attract hundreds of Ghanaians from across the country, with calls on many to follow the event on television or online.
