SAN NICOLAS DE BARI, Cuba: Disguised as a sparrowhawk, and convincingly mimicking its predatory cry, a drone made of wood, scrap metal and plastic disperses birds at a Cuban airfield.
From afar one could be fooled: soaring and swooping with its 1.3-meter (4.3-foot) wingspan, the mechanical bird flies autonomously for an hour at a time, and boasts impressive, if somewhat stiff plumage.

Cuba denounces impact of US blockade at Eurasian forum
Moscow, Apr 30 (Prensa Latina) Prime Minister Manuel Marrero on Friday denounced the tightening of the United States blockade against Cuba, at a meeting of the Inter-governmental Council, in the Russian city of Kazan.
In his virtual speech, the head of Government recalled that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a large-scale global multisectoral crisis, aggravated by trade wars and unilateral coercive measures that violate international law. In this situation, Cuba has had to deal with the unprecedented tightening of the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the US Government, which has remained intact under the administration of President (Joe) Biden, he underlined.

It is the creation of a group of engineers keen to develop cheap, local alternatives to foreign-made technology on the island under United States (US) sanctions since 1962.
Eighty per cent of the mechanical bird is fashioned by hand – mainly in makeshift workshops set up at the homes of individual engineers, who largely have to make do with the most basic equipment and parts.
