10:51 | Lima, Jan. 23. Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez affirmed that general elections have already been called, when asked about Somos Peru political party s request to postpone them claiming an increase in COVID-19 infections.
According to the high-ranking official, the Executive Branch has held meetings with representatives of electoral organizations to discuss the process, and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has adopted seven protocols to guarantee safety during the elections.
Likewise, the Cabinet chief stated that support of police and the armed forces will be available in order to ensure safety during the voting process.

The electoral authority deemed as very important what the Executive Branch indicated, meaning that there are currently no elements that could lead to postponing the general elections initially scheduled for April 11.
In statements to Ideele Radio, the official indicated that the safety conditions for citizens are being evaluated for any decision on the matter. I am totally convinced that experts from the Ministry of Health are working to adequately measure the data and signs of the pandemic in the country, he added.
Given its nature, the JNE cannot establish health measures and therefore has not issued measures related to the matter or to be implemented in the electoral process, he indicated.
