NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday extended Rs 50 lakh insurance coverage scheme meant for healthcare workers across India who die in the line of Covid19 that had expired last month but had been extended till April 24 as an interim arrangement.
The scheme under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, announced last year as part of Covid19 relief package, had come to an end on March 24 and the government had said that it was meant to provide a safety net to about 22 lakh healthcare workers.
The latest extension, after an agreement with New India Assurance, is for next one year and so far, 287 claims have been settled under the scheme which includes claims from the families of 168 doctors who died after contracting Covid19 while treating patients.

Amidst the raging second wave of coronavirus in India, the Centre has decided to withdraw the insurance scheme of Rs 50 lakh for the healthcare workers who die on the Covid-19 duty. In a letter, the Union health secretary has informed the states about the conclusion of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, an insurance scheme for healthcare workers who die in the line of Covid-19 duty.

Amid a record rise in Covid-19 cases and stretched healthcare infrastructure across several states, a crucial safety net for frontline healthcare workers against Covid, provided by the government last year has expired.
The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) insurance scheme for health workers battling Covid-19, which was implemented on March 3, 2020, to provide a safety net to the health workers fighting COVID-19, has lapsed. The government, however, says that a new dispensation for the same is in the works.
NEW DELHI: The Union health ministry on Monday announced that all claims of Covid warriors under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package will be settled till April 24 after which a fresh insurance policy for them will become effective.
In a tweet, the ministry said that a new dispensation will be provided to cover the corona warriors . For this, the ministry is in talks with the New India Assurance, it said. Two hundred and eight seven claims have been paid by the insurance company so far. The scheme has played a crucial psychological role in boosting the morale of the health workers fighting Covid-19, the ministry said in a statement.
