In order to reach out to the farmers amid the ongoing protest against the farm laws, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the next instalment of financial benefit under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) on December 25, 2020 at 12 pm via video conferencing. With the push of a button, the Prime Minister will enable the transfer of more than Rs. 18,000 crore to more than 9 crores beneficiary farmer families. Prime Minister will also have a conversation with farmers from 6 different states during the event. The farmers will share their experiences with PM-KISAN and also on various other initiatives taken by the Government for the welfare of farmers. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will also be present on the occasion.

More agri reforms due, hopeful of resuming talks with farmers: Tomar

Despite agitating farmers wanting the new farm laws to be rolled back and amid demands of “concrete solution”, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said the government would continue with the reforms as they are still due in many areas. He reiterated his hope that protesting farmers will soon come forward to resume their dialogue with the Centre. The minister said any agitation can be resolved only through dialogue and urged the protesting unions to fix a date and time for the next round of talks. “There are still many areas left where reforms are due.,” he said. Tomar received six boxes of letters with signatures of 3,13,363 farmers from 20 states, including Punjab through NGO CNRI, in support of the farm laws. Of these, 12,895 farmers were from Punjab and 127,000 farmers were from Haryana.

Shun stubbornness, take discussion forward with ‘open mind’: Farmers Addressing a press conference, representatives of farmer unions urged the government to create a conducive atmosphere for a fruitful dialogue. “Even the Supreme Court has said that suspend implementation of farm laws. This will lead to a better environment to hold talks,” said Shiv Kumar Kakka, National President, Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Mahasangh. Swaraj India’s Yogendra Yadav said the government should not repeat amendments rejected by the farmers but come up with concrete proposals in writing. “Govt is constantly holding talks with so-called farmers’ leaders and organisations who’re not associated with our movement at all. This is an attempt to break our movement. The government is dealing with protesting farmers, the way it deals with its opposition,” he said.
