JAMMU, Apr 5: Constable Rakeshwar Singh Manhas, a CoBRA Commando of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) from Jammu has been missing from the site of the Chhattisgarh ambush in which 22 security personnel of the CRPF got martyrdom on Saturday.
Son of the soil, Rakeshwar Singh Manhas was part of the joint offensive of security forces comprising CRPF, its elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF), comprising 2000 security personnel that launched an anti-Naxal operation from Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur and Sukma districts in the South Bastar forests, considered as the Maoist stronghold, on Friday night.
NEW DELHI: A possible leak by local villagers about the movement of a large number of CRPF and Chhattisgarh police personnel in Tarrem area of Bijapur could have led to quick mobilisation of CPI (Maoist) cadres in their ‘core’ area. They used their knowledge of vantage points to encircle the security personnel and inflict casualties.
Sources in Chhattisgarh police as well as CRPF officials said while there was indeed intelligence about PLGA-1 (People’s Liberation Guerilla Army) moving in the area, which led the forces to plan the massive operation, it is suspected that central regional command (CRC) cadres were also part of the ambush.
The Maoists have, however, not raised any formal demands for the release of the commando.
