Spray away: Mosquitoes back to biting after rains

Mosquitoes are back with a vengeance after recent rains in Central Texas. “After these rains I suspect we’ll see some disease start to pop up,” Cathy Brem, public health emergency preparedness director for the Bell County Public Health District, said. “That’s one of the triggers for us; when we start seeing some evidence of disease caused by mosquitoes.” Health officials recommend that Central Texans get rid of any standing water at their homes and use bug spray outside as well as wearing clothing that covers the arms and legs when outside. West Nile and Zika cases caused by mosquitoes were among the biggest public health issues in Texas before the coronavirus crisis began.

Bell County, Temple ISD pause COVID-19 updates

After announcing that its director, Dr. Amanda Robison-Chadwell, was leaving earlier this week, the Bell County Public Health District did not update their COVID-19 dashboard Friday. Due to the learning curve required to update the dashboard, the district announced that it would pause its updates until such time as the incidence rate of the virus rises above 80 cases per 100,000 people. While Bell County will not update their dashboard, other counties and local school districts are continuing to do so. Milam County showed on its website Friday that they had five active cases of COVID-19, with three people currently hospitalized. The county has seen 1,446 total cases and 48 deaths.

Community challenges: TISD nurses honored for work during pandemic

With the academic year winding down to its final weeks, Kim Glawe — the Temple Independent School District’s director of health services — reflected not only on the challenges that were overcome in the midst of COVID-19, but also the school nurses that helped provide students a safe learning environment. This past year, school nurses in Temple ISD tackled daily COVID-19 screenings, conducted contact tracing and assisted with hundreds of COVID-19 vaccinations. “The first thing I said to the nurses at our very first staff meeting was ‘Thank you for not quitting,’” Glawe told the Telegram. “When COVID-19 came about, it brought a challenge to the Temple community and to the Temple school nurses.”
