The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has announced that the team tasked to look into the efficacy and safety of Laguna tablets or syrup as a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) therapeutic or supplement is set to conduct its data analysis for its placebo-controlled clinical trial next week.

During President Duterte’s televised public briefing on Wednesday night, May 5, DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the two-stage, randomized and placebo-controlled lagundi clinical trial is expected to be completed soon.
He said the overall aim of the 10 month-long project is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Laguna tablet/syrup in patients without co-morbidities suspected or with confirmed mild COVID-19.

Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that they are currently coordinating with the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) to discuss the matter.
“Kausap natin ang PNA, kausap natin ang PRC. Ang isa na nga pong hiling, agahan na lang natin ang board exams nitong nurses (We are in talks with the PNA and PRC. There was a request to conduct the board exams for nurses at an earlier date),” said Vergeire in an online forum on Wednesday, May 5.
“I think it was scheduled in December. Nire-request natin at ng IATF baka pwede ng gawin ng June, so that by July may mga fresh graduates and freshly licensed nurses na tayo na pwede na rin nating makasama dito sa ginagawa nating response (We and the IATF are requesting to conduct it in June, so that by July we have fresh graduates and freshly licensed nurses who can also join in our response),” she added.

The Department of Health (DOH) said over two million doses of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines have already been administered in the country, as of May 4.

Based on the data presented by Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje during the Laging Handa press briefing Wednesday, May 5, a total of 2,065,235 doses have so far been administered.
Those who received their first doses were workers in frontline health services totaling 1,114,345; senior citizens, 329,650; individuals with comorbidity, 293,312; and frontline personnel in essential sector, 7,342.

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) said on Monday, May 3, that the clinical trial on the use of Ivermectin as a treatment for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) will involve patients with “non-severe” or those with mild to moderate cases.

Montoya said the research team from the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila- Philippine General Hospital (PGH), headed by Dr. Aileen Wang, is now drafting the research protocol, which includes the timeline of the clinical trial and the target participants.

DOST-PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jaime C. Montoya cited the readiness of the technology adopters of numerous nutritious food products of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) to launch such kind of food distribution drive.
