In her first statement since she was appointed by the Ministry of Tourism headed by CS Najib Balala, Ms Campbell said that she was honoured to be Kenya’s International Ambassador.
“I feel so privileged and honoured to be confirmed as Magical Kenya International Brand Ambassador. Not just because of the obvious benefits that tourism brings to an economy but also I am proud to be able to represent such an important country as Kenya,” she said.

Recently, in a bid to give renaissance to the nosediving Kenyan tourism industry owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ministry appointed British model Naomi Campbell as the Magical Kenya International Tourism Ambassador.
The contested move sparked a row, with Kenyans arguing the ministry could have picked a renown Kenyan like Lupita for the job.
The ministry played defense citing futile attempts to reach the Hollywood star, a claim she refuted as false.
In a recent interview with Radio Jambo, Eric Omondi imparted to being in talks with the ministry to replace Naomi Campbell, a claim the ministry promptly dismissed.
This the CS says that it was not true.
“Yes I have seen an email he sent to my office requesting for a meeting but he did not specify what the meeting was about. I receive hundreds of emails from people requesting to be Tourism Ambassadors,” said Balala.
Last month, the Tourism CS appointed British supermodel Naomi Campbell as the Magical Kenya International Tourism Ambassador.
Balala said Campbell’s appointment to promote Kenyan tourism abroad is meant to strengthen the domestic market and not take away anything from it.
The news of her appointment stirred controversy among Kenyans with many expressing their displeasure on social media.
