Dr Karen Weekes is aiming to become the first Irish woman to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic solo.
Rowing 3,000 miles from the Canaries to the Caribbean. Such is the feat Dr Karen Weekes is undertaking. Solo. And when she is midway across the Atlantic Ocean, the closest person to her will be in the International Space Station.
Karen relays this information to Irish Country Living and it takes a few minutes to sink in: the Space Station!
This December, Karen, who (as I’m sure you’ve guessed) is an endurance athlete, is planning to undertake this 3,000-mile row in a 24ft rowboat. At this time of year it’s hoped she will have the trade winds behind her.

LIT and Athlone IT have been granted Technological University status.
The new institution is expected to have a student population of up to 15,000 and open later this year, with a target date of September 1st, 2021.

The Technological University is expected to employ around 1,200 people across six campuses – two in Limerick, with one also in each of Athlone, Clonmel, Ennis, and Thurles.

A NEW TECHNOLOGICAL university for Ireland’s Midlands has been announced by Minister for Further Education Simon Harris.
Harris said today that Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology will amalgamate to form a new technological university.
“The higher education landscape is rapidly evolving and the people of the Midlands and Mid-West will henceforth be at the heart both geographically and practically of that evolution,” he said.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD has today (5 May 2021) granted Technological University (TU) status to Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology.
This is the third TU to be created since 2019 and is a milestone for the Midlands and the Mid-West.
Minister Harris said: This is another hugely important day for higher education in Ireland and in particular for the Midlands and Mid-West regions. The higher education landscape is rapidly evolving and the people of the Midlands and Mid-West will be at the heart both geographically and practically of that evolution.
