Chris Haward, the new Chief Constable for Lincolnshire Police said the force “will only really be enforcing those extreme breaches where people are flagrantly breaking the rules and the guidance.” This comes as at least two samples of a new, more infectious, variant of coronavirus have been taken in Lincolnshire, according to a new study. The force will continue to follow the four E’s: engage, explain, encourage and enforce in dealing with the challenges of coronavirus, but will take a firm stance if needed.

Mutant strain of Covid-19 found near Braintree

THE mutant strain of coronavirus blamed for a surge in cases across south east England has been identified near Braintree, scientists say. Experts say the strain - known as VUI-202012/01 - is 70 per cent more transmissible and fear it is now present in most parts of the UK. But Braintree is one of 57 areas in the UK which has had confirmed cases with the new strain, the Covid-19 Genomics UK Consortium (COG-UK) monitoring group have said. It is the only place in Essex where the strain has been confirmed. Braintree has seen a huge rise in cases since the start of December and is now close to recording 1,000 Covid-19 cases a week.

Of the more than 18 million cases officially reported in the United States, just 51,212, or 0.3 percent, have been genetically analyzed for variants, according to the latest data from the GISAID Initiative, which provides a global database of coronavirus genomes. Worldwide, the United States ranks 43rd in percentage of cases sequenced among countries with more than 100 infections.
