Marion police investigate homicide - Crawford County Now

MARION – On March 8 th at 5:36 PM, Marion Police Officers responded to a home in the 250 block of Cummins Avenue to check the well-being of the male resident at that location. Officers were unable to summon a resident to the door, which resulted in the officers forcing entry into the home to verify the safety of those inside. Once inside the home, officers encountered 78-year-old Ronald E. Gibson sitting at the dining room table facing away from them. Gibson proceeded to stab himself in the presence of the officers. Upon checking the rest of the home, Officers located 80-year- old Shirley Gibson (Ronald’s wife) deceased of an apparent gunshot wound. The family dog was also found deceased from a gunshot wound.

The Marion County Prosecutor s Office has tapped former Monroe County Prosecutor Chris Gaal to investigate the shooting to avoid an appearance of impropriety, court records show.  Speedway Police said officers were responding to a call about a suspicious person around 11:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the 5900 block of West 25th St., just east of North High School Road.

Special prosecutor appointed to investigate fatal shooting involving Speedway police

(WISH) A special prosecutor has been assigned to the case of the fatal Speedway police shooting of an accused arsonist in February after the coroner said the suspect died of multiple gunshot wounds. Attorney Chris Gaal was appointed to investigate the police shooting, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Monday. Gaal is a former Monroe County prosecutor. On Wednesday, a spokesman for Speedway Police Department said all inquiries about the investigation are being directed to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, where another spokesman said it’s forwarding questions to the special prosecutor. Gaal told News 8 he cannot comment on the investigation.
