DMH hires new director for ER
As part of an effort to regain patient trust and shed the “band-aid station” label, Doctors’ Memorial Hospital (DMH) has appointed a new medical director over its Emergency Room (ER).
In an April 12 release, DMH CEO Chris Schmidt stated that the local hospital “is pleased to announce the appointment of Garrett Chumney, MD, as site medical director for emergency medicine. The addition of Dr. Chumney is made possible through a partnership with Envision Physician Services (Envision), a multi-specialty medical group with a national footprint.”

New CEO intends to make DMH ‘a winner’
Admitting that the “tough road” to regaining patient’s trust and financial stability “will not be a sprint, but a marathon,” new Doctors’ Memorial Hospital (DMH) CEO Chris Schmidt says he has every intention of making the local rural hospital “a winner” that allows residents access to quality healthcare right here in Perry.
As the city’s representatives on the DMH Board of Directors, Glenda Hamby and Debra McGrew introduced Schmidt to the city council at its March 9 meeting.

Fatal 98 crash
two-vehicle collision on Hwy. 98 West Tuesday morning claimed the life of a 25-year-old local man when the truck he was driving slammed into the rear of a semi-tractor trailer at the intersection of County Road 14.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the crash was reported at 9:37 a.m. near the intersection of Hwy. 98 and Aucilla River Road/Econfina River Road. Both vehicles were traveling east toward Perry when the white 3500 Dodge Ram truck ran into the rear of a tractor trailer being transported by a Waukeenah Fertilizer & Farm, Inc. Mack truck.
The identity of the driver of the Dodge truck, who was pronounced dead on scene, is being withheld pending notification of family. The 65-year-old truck driver and a 68-year-old passenger were transported to Doctors’ Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
Health Dept. to begin giving COVID vaccine
After receiving a shipment of 500 doses, the Department of Health-Taylor (DOH-Taylor) will begin administering the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to Taylor County senior citizens next week.
The free vaccines will be offered by appointment only to individuals who are 65 years of age or older throughout the month of January, with the first appointments scheduled for Tuesday, January 5.
Previously-available dates included Jan. 5, Jan. 6, Jan. 8, Jan. 12, Jan. 13 and Jan. 15, however, due to the limited number of slots filling up quickly, DOH-Taylor is currently working to expand appointments beyond Jan. 15.
With only 60 appointments available per day, interested individuals are encouraged to call DOH-Taylor at (850) 584-5087 (press 2 for medical services) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to check availability and schedule an appointment.
