Judge bars unfettered travel for man accused in threat against senator

A 54-year-old New Berlin man accused of threatening a state senator with a gun must undergo a mental-health evaluation and won’t be allowed to travel throughout the United States after a Sangamon County judge’s ruling Friday.  Circuit Judge Ryan Cadagin modified several conditions of Michael L. Hoyle’s release that originally were imposed after Hoyle posted $15,000 bail on March 16. Hoyle allegedly threatened state Sen. Elgie Sims, D-Chicago, with a loaded handgun while the two were driving cars on Lawrence Avenue and Chatham Road in Springfield on March 15.  Sims, 50, attended the hearing Friday accompanied by about 20 Democratic senators and Senate staffers, including Senate President Don Harmon of Oak Park, Sens. Robert Peters, Mike Simmons and Sara Feigenholtz, both of Chicago, and Sen. Julie Morrison of Lake Forest. They gave Sims pats on the back and hugs before and afterward.

Following a successful research week last spring, despite all presentations given virtually due to COVID-19, this year’s in-person event at the library proved to be the largest Research Week since its inception in 2017, with 263 presentations. “Research Week serves to provide all our students whether residential, online, graduate, or undergraduate an opportunity to showcase all the hard work they have put into their research, scholarship, and creative works,” Associate Director for the Center for Research & Scholarship Darren Wu said. “It is an opportunity for them to develop soft skills such as demonstrating their work ethic, critical thinking, meeting deadlines, performing under stress, and communication in a low-stakes environment.”

State Representative Adam Niemerg says a recently introduced proposal to merge and modernize the FOID and Concealed Carry cards is a small step in the right direction, and maybe a starting point to begin conversations. However, he believes the FOID card is unconstitutional, and the proposal as it stands is simply kicking the matter down the road to deal with in the future.
