Updated May 10 at 7:36 PM After a weekendlong search, a Portland hiker who went missing in the Columbia River Gorge last Saturday was found alive and rescued this morning. Joe Dean, 71, was first reported missing May 8 after he texted his wife that he was lost near Rock of Ages Ridge, an area that suffered fire damage and has been closed since the Eagle Creek Fire in 2017. A 16-member search-and-rescue team was deployed that night.

A 71-year-old hiker who went missing near the Horsetail Falls trail system over the weekend was found Monday, May 10, conscious and breathing.
Rescue crews reported around 9 a.m. that Joseph Edward Dean had been discovered near the Rock of Ages Ridge more than 24 hours after he was reported missing.
At 8:33 p.m. Saturday, May 8, the Multnomah County Sheriff s Office received reports of an overdue, missing hiker. Dean had reportedly sent a text message to his wife stating he was lost somewhere on the Rock of the Ages Trail.

A 71-year-old man who had been missing in the Columbia River Gorge since Saturday night was found alive Monday, officials said.
One of the volunteer search-and-rescue crews that began looking for Joe Dean of Portland early Monday found him near the trail where he was last heard from, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet.
“Joe Dean has been FOUND near the Rock of Ages Ridge,” the sheriff’s office tweeted. “He is conscious and breathing. Rescuers are hiking to his location to help get him down safely.”
