Woman gets three years in prison for role in double murder | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 26, 2021 YOUNGSTOWN Courtney L. Hall of Akron, 29, was sentenced to three years in prison today for helping her boyfriend after he killed Sierra Morris and her father, Leroy Morris, Feb. 28 in the Morris’ West Judson Avenue home. Hall was girlfriend of John C. Bruner III, 31, formerly of Warren, who pleaded guilty Aug. 26 to murder, aggravated murder and other offenses and was sentenced to 41 years to life in prison. Hall pleaded guilty earlier to three counts of tampering with evidence for hiding Bruner’s clothes, gun and car after the murders. Hall told Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court she did not know Bruner was going to kill anyone when she drove him there, and loved the little girl Bruner and Sierra Morris had together too much to allow something like to happen.

Jan 20, 2021 YOUNGSTOWN Phil Chance Jr. of Boardman, former Youngstown police officer, was sentenced to six months in county jail today for giving out carrying-concealed-weapon licenses to about 260 people without being licensed to train people or issue them. Because of the actions of Chance, 41, son of former Mahoning County Sheriff Phil Chance Sr., the Mahoning sheriff’s office had to inform the approximately 260 people who received the certificates that they were not valid. Chance Jr. also must serve six months of house arrest after he leaves jail and must pay a fine of $750 and repay the $6,983 cost of the investigation. Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court had Chance Jr. removed immediately after the hearing to begin his jail sentence. Greene said he will have Chance Jr. moved to another jail.

YOUNGSTOWN The fall from grace for former Youngstown police officer Phil Chance Jr. took another plunge Wednesday as a judge ordered him to spend six months in jail for issuing 263 worthless carrying-a-concealed-weapon certificates. Chance, 41, of Boardman, pleaded guilty earlier to six counts of tampering with records for the crimes, committed between 2011 and 2018.

Motel continues improvements | News, Sports, Jobs

BOARDMAN A local lodging business continues to make repairs mandated by the Boardman Township Fire Department. Fire Chief Mark Pitzer said that the Wagon Wheel on Market Street has seen some of the improvements outlined in a settlement from 2019. “The Wagon Wheel has come into compliance with the agreed settlement,” Pitzer confirmed. Work recently completed includes roofing “that was required to be replaced” last August, he said. Now, owners are required to finish the next phase of the replacement by August of this year, which includes the northern section of the roof. Ownership of the motel declined Tuesday to comment.
